August 19, 2010: Releasing and Letting Go

By letting it go it all gets done. The world is won by those who let it go. But when you try and try, the world is beyond the winning. ~Lao Tzu

The real key to lasting success, peace, harmony, health… life… Being, is to allow what is to be. One of the easiest ways to do this is by releasing and just letting go… of everything.

These ideas come from both The Sedona Method and Larry Crane's The Release Technique which are both founded on the work of Lester Levenson.

  1. Focus on the issue you would like to feel better about (what is your NOW feeling?).
  2. Say to yourself, "Could I let this feeling go?"
  3. Then say to yourself, "Could I allow myself to welcome this feeling? Could I allow this feeling to just be here? After all its just energy."
  4. Next say, "Could I allow myself to dive into the core of this feeling?"
  5. Then, "Could I let this feeling go?"
  6. "Would I? Am I willing to let go?"
  7. "When?"

And here is the key, it doesn't matter how you answer the question. Even if you answer NO to the first or even all of the questions, just continue with the next question. Just continue to let go and reassess how you are feeling now.

Breathe. Let go. And remind yourself that this very moment is the only one you know you have for sure. ~Oprah Winfrey

Here are some additional ways to ask the same questions on releasing and letting go of anything and everything. This first one is critical. To just let go of the wanting to do or have anything. Because "wanting" implies lack. So by just letting go of the "wanting" you free yourself up to be open to even more possibilities. Buddha taught that the root of suffering is to be found in our constant wanting and craving.

Could I let go of the wanting? Would I let it go? When?

Could I allow myself to welcome this feeling as best I can? Could I allow myself to simply let this feeling be? Could I allow myself to let this go? Would I allow myself let it go? When?

Could I welcome this feeling? Could I allow myself to feel or just be present with this feeling? What is at the core of this feeling? Could I allow myself to go in consciousness to the core of this feeling? Could I allow myself to dive into this feeling?

Then, could I let go of the wanting? Would I let it go? When?

Another way to help with releasing is to imagine where you feel, in your body, any tension or un-ease. Describe it. What does it look like? Does it have a shape, a color, a texture, a temperature? Is it moving or still, Is it large or small? Now notice where that un-ease is located in your body and just imagine sticking a small straw-like tube into it and feeling whatever is inside just slowly releasing, like steam releasing from a radiator… just allowing it to release… just letting it go…

Letting it go even more… and even more… and even more…

Remember, whenever you are experiencing any unwanted feeling, emotion, thought or behavior, just be present with it for a moment or two and ask yourself three questions. Could I let this feeling go? Would I? When? Continue releasing and letting go until you notice the shift, which won't be long. And then just notice how you are feeling now.

When I let go of what I am, I become what I might be. ~Lao Tzu

Today is a wonderful day. I wonder how much and how often I can be releasing and just letting go… of anything in my life… just allowing what is to be and allowing what ever feelings I am having to be… present?

When one door closes another door opens; but we so often look so long and so regretfully upon the closed door, that we do not see the ones which open for us. ~Alexander Graham Bell

Tension is who you think you should be. Relaxation is who you are. ~Chinese Proverb

Suffering is not holding you. You are holding suffering. When you become good at the art of letting sufferings go, then you'll come to realize how unnecessary it was for you to drag those burdens around with you. You'll see that no one else other than you was responsible. The truth is that existence wants your life to become a festival. ~Osho

When you become good at the art of letting sufferings go, then you'll come to realize what you were dragging around with you. And for that, no one else other than you was responsible. ~Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh
